Hello Paddlers, case
The sun returns this week and our winter continues to be very paddle friendly. Temperatures will rise to the mid 50s throughout the week with lows hovering around freezing. Winds are mostly light but pick up slightly in the afternoons. The best days to get out there this week look like Saturday and Sunday.
The big news around South Tahoe Standup Paddle is the launch of the new Race the Lake of the Sky website and the opening of registration. This year is set to be the biggest yet. We can’t wait to paddle with friends new and old. In the coming months, we’ll be bringing you race courses, sponsor info and more. Mark your calendars for June 27-28.
It was great to see the snow fall last weekend. With snow levels at 19 percent of normal in the Sierra, we’re going to need every flake we can get. We want the lake to be full and healthy come summer, so we can get out and paddle. That said, the walk out through the shallows isn’t as bad as it looks. I’ve been paddling out of Regan Beach and haven’t had too much trouble.
It’s time to start planning for a summer full of events. Watching the SUPRacer.com Calendar, races are starting to pop up closer and closer to home. Sacramento will host their first race this year in the middle of March. From there, North America dominates the schedule
This week in SUP news was pretty slow. There was one article worth mentioning. The Wall Street Journal featured standup paddling CEO Jon Fredricks last week. Fredricks is the head of Welk Resorts. He snowboards (often in Tahoe) and paddles regularly near his home in Solano Beach. Now that standup paddling has been featured in the WSJ, I think it’s safe to say the sport has made it.
I’ll leave you with a quick video of Laird Hamilton just going to town in the waves off Kauai. It’s hard to get tired of watching this.
The shop is open various hours on the weekends. Give us a call or shoot us an email if there’s something specific you’re looking for. Or you can always post on the Facebook page. We hope you have a wonderful week out there.
