Hello Paddlers, check
The storm has cleared and we’re in for another (arrggh) week of sunshine. The upside to this is it will be fantastic winter paddling conditions out there. The tributaries are brimming and Lake Tahoe has already added 5 inches to its depth, ambulance according to the National Weather Service Reno.
We’re looking at temps in the high 50s this week. Winds will almost entirely stay below 5 mph. My bet is on Wednesday and Thursday for glassy conditions. This really is a great time to paddle. When summer rolls around and the lake fills with boats and wakes, site we’ll be dreaming of warm and lonely winter days.
Last week’s storm dumped a ton of rain and produced some very strong winds. These winds made for the best surfing conditions on Lake Tahoe I’ve ever seen. I paddled out on the North Shore into some well overhead swells. After my face had been scoured by wind-thrown water, I decided to move to a more protected spot and jump on my SUP. The video is below.
Again, not a ton going on in the greater SUP world right now. We’re seeing a few new products being released. Lakeshore Paddle Company recently released their new line, which includes a new model of the River Rover. The SUP Movie’s trailer is going around, and it’s awesome. The movie is available on Poorboyz website.
In events, there are races in the usual locales: Hawaii, New Zealand, the U.K., and Australia. Central California will be home to its first race a while. San Rafael will host the 101 Surf Spots Race #5. Head over to SUPcurrents.com for more information.
Speaking of races, South Tahoe Standup Paddle continues to dial in Race the Lake of the Sky 2015. Somebody leaked the new divisions to the media. With a lot more classes, the everyone will have fairer competition. That means more trophies too!
